Here is how to get it to work. Thanks to bb818 for the info.

Configure BlackBerry & Carrier Settings
Using your BlackBerry, go to 'Options' / 'Advanced Options' / 'TCP'. Once there fill in the appropriate APN for your carrier. Once you have configured the APN, you should 'Turn Wireless Off' and 'Turn Wireless On' for the device to register with the new settings.
